Key Summary
What is a farmhouse sink? A farmhouse style sink has a deep basin and is a multi-functional sink that can be in the kitchen or laundry.
They are deep and compared to a normal sink, they hold larger amounts of water. Farmhouse sinks also allow for large items to be washed.
What is a Farmhouse Sink?
A farmhouse sink is a type of deep sink that features an exposed front-facing side, aka as an apron sink. These sinks typically feature rounded corner edges and can hold a lot of water due to their size.
Types of Farmhouse Sinks
There are several types of sink that are considered to be a farmhouse style, including:
Farmhouse Drainboard
Features an attached drainage tray with grooves so water drains back into the sink.
The drain board may be on one or both sides of the main farmhouse sink. Drainboards are available in both top or undermount styles of sink.
Deep Drop-in or Top Mount
Rectangular design that is available in single, double or even triple bowl. Features a lip or rim that rests on top of the benchtop.
Undermount
Delivers a classic look that is installed so the rim is hidden from view. Sink configuration is available in single, double or triple bowl.
Vintage
A style of traditional farmhouse sink that is typically a wall mounted, drop-in style. Features a single or double bowl and is often an apron front style with an integrated backsplash.
Drop In (Top Mount) vs Undermount: What’s the Difference?
The way in which your farmhouse sink is installed can vary. The main options are:
Top Mount
The lip sits on top of the surface the sink is installed onto. It will be a more affordable option to install and generally allows for more cabinet space or retains your existing benchtop.
Top mount can trap debris and water around the lip/seam where the sink meets the benchtop. However, this can be addressed by properly sealing around the edges.
Undermount
The sink lip is below the bench line and delivers a more streamlined, integrated look. Requires more complicated, costly installation and not recommended for wood or laminate countertops/benchtops.
What Are the Advantages of Having a Farmhouse Sink?
There are many advantages to farmhouse sinks, including:
Design
Suits a traditional style kitchen or rustic, country and home-style spaces. Delivers a cosy and relaxed aesthetic that is a popular choice today.
Farmhouse sinks are versatile and particularly complement a kitchen design that is classic and welcoming.
Ergonomics
The person standing at the sink does not have to lean or reach over any bench space to access a farmhouse sink as it has a front facing apron. This is good for posture and easier for shorter people to access.
Size
Wonderful depth makes a farmhouse sink large enough to wash everything from giant pots, to laundry and small children.
Flexibility
Various designs and materials to choose from. Traditionally made from a variety of materials including porcelain, cast iron or fireclay.
Nowadays there are natural stone and metal options, such as stainless steel, bronze and copper on the market. Typically installed as a top mount/drop in style or undermount.
Are There Any Disadvantages to a Farmhouse Sink?
There are some things to consider if you’re thinking about installing a farmhouse sink:
Installation
Farmhouse sinks require ample space and study support to carry its weight once installed. Ensure you have space and adequate structural support, including a cutaway space, before purchase.
Size
Getting used to a deeper sink can require an adjustment when washing dishes to prevent breakage. The amount of water used in a farmhouse sink is higher than a smaller sink.
Cost
Partly due to size and partly due to the price of labour installation costs, farmhouse sinks can be more expensive than other sink styles. This is especially true of an undermount, farmhouse sink style.
