Kitchen renovation in Mornington

Jan and Jim contacted our head designer at Mint Kitchens Burwood, Lindsay Williams, upon purchasing a waterfront home in Mt Martha, Mornington Peninsula.  They knew that the kitchen design in their new home would be inadequate to suit their lifestyle.

The semi-retired couple had carried out two previous home renovations with Mint Kitchens Burwood and had been impressed with the customer service, design flair and practical functionality we offered.  For their newly purchased home in Mornington, they decided to enlist our services for the bathroom and kitchen renovation once more.

Kitchen renovations in Mornington

A brief for contemporary beach front kitchen design in Mornington Peninsula

Like many other Mornington Peninsula kitchens, the style of the kitchen had to suit the home’s contemporary beach front style.  The beautiful Mt Martha home featured an open plan with many windows overlooking the landscaped garden and swimming pool, the single-story home had a relaxed, beachy feel.

The problems they had were that the existing kitchen which adjoined the living and dining spaces lacked the style needed to complement the greater living areas. It also lacked storage space for the client’s extensive cookware and dining/glass ware collection.  Jan was keen to entertain her extended family and friends in their new kitchen and wanted an additional oven and dishwasher included in the new kitchen design, as well as a butler’s pantry.

To accommodate these requests, the new kitchen needed to be larger and have a more economical use of space.

Challenges to the new kitchen design

One major obstacle to the new design was the existing tiling footprint.  Although the new kitchen had to feel larger and fit more appliances, it had to fit had to fit within the size of the existing footprint.

Another constraint was the need to make accommodate a butler’s pantry which meant thinking outside the square to create a fitting solution.

The final limitation was budget. Since the existing kitchen was only five years old, the appliances and cabinetry were still in good shape.  The couple wanted to re-use some of the existing appliances and cabinets in order to keep to their budget.

A kitchen renovation and butler’s pantry that hit the brief

Adjoining the living and dining rooms, the new kitchen is both a practical work space and a relaxing living area, with a design that is ideal for entertaining.  In addition, a new butler’s pantry provides plenty of work space and storage.

Highly-functional drawers throughout the kitchen provide storage all manner of cooking and serving ware.  New storage features in the kitchen include a tall pantry with roll-out shelves located near the cooktop and a pull-out bottle and spice drawer in the island bench for often used foods.

The kitchen is finished in ‘Extreme White’ and ‘Ploughed Earth’ 2pack satin painted doors and panels complimented by matching ‘Walnut’ reconstituted quartz bench-tops.

The butler’s pantry provides space for an additional sink and dishwasher, and ample space for an array of small appliances.  Laminate benchtops in a bright red were chosen as a point of difference from the muted tones in the kitchen.  Multiple roll-out shelves provide plenty of storage and ease of access for a range of cooking and bake ware.  As Jan loves to cook, the butler’s pantry provides a creative, ’messy’ space for her to work in.
