The Brief

The best way to describe the new kitchen would be to say that the entire space has been ‘Reimagined’. The existing space was split into the kitchen and a separate dining area which was never used. After discussing many layout options, the final decision was to combine the two spaces together to make the most of the area as a whole.

By doing this we could create a very large kitchen with lots of additional storage and space for integrated appliances, as well as a very substantial island bench which could be used to sit at for day to day activities and to gather around when entertaining. The dining table was then designed to butt into the island bench to create more room for entertaining groups and more inviting to use.

The kitchen was designed with workflows in mind. For example, next to the cooktop there is a pull-out drawer for oils, spices and chopping boards and the fridge and freezer were positioned between the kitchen and butler’s pantry. The bin was also positioned in the island bench as this is where the client likes to do some of her preparation whilst watching the TV in the lounge.

The special features of the kitchen include a beautiful big granite island bench, farmers timber veneer cabinetry and a porcelain benchtop and high splashback. In terms of materials the porcelain was chosen for its durability around the sink and cooktop and a higher splashback to help the space feel more open and to accentuate the higher ceilings. The tall glass wine cabinet at the end of the kitchen was another beautiful feature, which then referenced the custom-made glass sliding door for the butler’s pantry. The integrated appliances created a seamless look and the contrasting timber finger box rails connected the two materials and two sides of the kitchen together.

The main design challenge was that there were two structural columns. The first was in the pantry and was resolved by building the wall around it. The second was a structural column was in the middle of the splashback and hence two windows were incorporated to try to let the most amount of light in, but also be in proportion.
